Blessed is the One


“Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, 

and blessed is the one 

who trusts in the Lord.”

Proverbs 16:20

Do you ever think of yourself as being blessed because you trust in the Lord? Well it’s true!

It can be tough to realize how blessed we are, especially in the midst of difficult circumstances. But over the years I’ve seen God do some amazing things in my life, and in my family’s lives!

These types of faith boosters can actually strengthen us when we consider them.

And you know what? When we give heed to God’s instruction, we not only learn but experience first hand God’s faithfulness to us. And our faith is increased. Ain’t that so cool?

Lord God thank you so much for teaching us, building our faith and our trust in You!

Help us to continue to love and follow You! Hallelujah!

To Do What is Right


“To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.”

Proverbs 21:3

I’m not sure we realize how powerful this verse is. We all know it’s better to do right than to not do right. But to say that it’s more important than sacrifice, we need to dig a little deeper.

Remember sacrifice during this time period, meant killing an animal, and that usually meant a sin offering. So what this means here is that is better to not sin – then to have to make it right later! Oh wow!!

So how does this apply to us today? Since we don’t sacrifice animals in our times, what is our sacrifice in the modern world setting? Praise. It is actually better for us to not sin at all, then to pray or praise God, with our hearts and minds not right. Oh wow again!

I was told once of a missionary overseas that could not forgive her sister. I don’t know what the sister did, but the missionary was helping the poor in another country. This missionary had a bitter attitude though, and would say things like, “I could never forgive my sister!!” She seethed with anger almost like a snake.

Friends it would have been better for that missionary to go home, and work it out with her sister, and especially to forgive her. Yes, it was even more important than helping the poor. This reminds me so much of Matthew 5 and Matthew 18, in the New Testament.

Lord God, thank You that You have our best interest at heart. Help us to have a strong faith in You, the type of faith that says I will do what is right! I will forgive and move on if needed. We don’t want to offer any bad sacrifices to You Our God. You are holy! Amen and amen.

To Love Mercy and to Walk Humbly


“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”

Micah 6: 8

Sometimes we complicate faith too much, don’t we? We often see faith as a set of rules, a religion where we do this or that. Now let me say that having rules can be very good for our health! For example, there are many reasons God says – “Don’t steal!”. And for our safety, we have traffic laws.

And yet here, and in other places in the Scriptures, we see a heart attitude, of doing right, and loving God. In this portion doing right means in His eyes, and includes how we treat others.

What does this remind you of? Well, I think of the verses about the Two Greatest Commandments, which are to love God, first and foremost, and then loving our neighbor as ourselves, which we are told is a lot like the first commandment. When we love God, we will want to do what is right, and will have humble attitudes.

If you want to see the world changed in a hurry – love your neighbors! And we must not forget to love God. Isn’t that beautiful? It’s so simple and yet so profound!

Lord God, help us to love You, and to love our neighbors! May we love mercy, and walk humbly with You! Amen and amen.

A Generous Person


“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Proverbs 11: 25

Have you ever been blessed by a friend, perhaps with a gift? And if you have, isn’t it amazing how this gift comes at the right time? A simple kind word, or even a card can do wonders to lift our spirits. E-cards can be amazing.

Tough times are so much easier to go through when we are encouraged by someone else. I think God places people in our lives to encourage us. And you know what? God places us in circumstances, and with others, so that we can encourage them!

Have you been used to bless others? It’s not that we seek the blessing, but when we give to others we become wonderfully blessed, knowing that we have contributed something positive, something beautiful, to make our world just a little bit better.

Heavenly Father, thank you for using the people in our lives as a wonderful blessing to us! Help us to reach out to others to be a blessing too. Lord God, You are amazing, and we thank You! Amen.

Deep Waters


“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters,

but one who has insight draws them out.”

Proverbs 20:5

What we ponder, and contemplate about our lives often goes very deep within us. Our self-image is part of this, but it goes beyond just what we think about ourselves. I think our purposes mentioned in this verse, also includes our motivations, our deep desires to be loved and accepted.

I have a photo here of the ocean, but a better illustration would be a well, especially considering the geography, and water sources for drinking at the time. Wells brought life to both livestock and people.

So, when we understand more about ourselves, of who we are now, and what our motivations should be, that is God at work giving us insight. And with insight we can draw out a Godly perspective and wisdom.

This reminds me of a verse in the Gospel of John, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”

Isn’t God amazing?

Lord God thank you for so many verses like this that encourage us to look deeper. Help us to understand who we are and who we should be. Give us wisdom, lead us and guide us, and shape us more into the people You want us to be. Amen!!

A Cheerful Heart


“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

Proverbs 17:22

Did you know that being happy is like medicine? Or maybe it is medicine!

Now we all go through terrible things, disappointments, and sometimes we even get crushed internally. But God does not want us to live there. It’s not good to dwell on, and be overwhelmed by the negative.

Yes, there are traumatized victims that may need therapy, and professional help, but for those of us that are able, the Lord, the King of the Universe, the One who made us all, loves us so much he wants a cheerful heart for us!!

Lord God, You know everything, and that there are times we don’t feel like being cheerful. Help us, encourage us, and help us to be healthy internally. Help us to trust in you! Amen.

Victory Rests with the Lord


“There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan

that can succeed against the Lord.

The horse is made ready for the day of battle,

Proverbs 21: 30, 31

I’m so glad God’s wisdom, and insight is higher than ours! Much stronger than ours!

We do have battles we face don’t we? And you what? We will not win every one of them.

But perhaps when things don’t go well, it is God’s way of moving us forward, but in a different direction.

We have to do our part though, we have to get our horses ready!

Lord God Almighty, please help us to be ready for the battles we face, and help us to walk closely with You.

We ask for Your help in the midst of what we face, sometimes daily.

And Lord please comfort our hearts in the battles we do not win. We know You have our future in Your hands. Amen!

Love and Faithfulness


“Let love and faithfulness never leave you;

bind them around your neck, write them

on the tablet of your heart.”

Proverbs 3:3

What a beautiful way to describe God’s heart for us. We know that God loves us, so I think this is pointing us to the love and faithfulness that we should carry, for Him and other people.

Remember the two greatest commandments? They are loving God, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.

Binding them around our neck could mean several things. It could be an illustration for showing other people, our love and faithfulness, as in wearing jewelry. But in this context, it seems to be more of reminding ourselves, to love and to be faithful.

And I love the illustration of writing them down on the tablet of our heart – no not the electronic kind, although that could work! Here God is speaking of stone tablets and carving them or etching them onto our hearts! Sounds kind of permanent doesn’t it?

May love and faithfulness never leave us!

Heavenly Father, may we continue to develop in our love for You, and other people. Help us, and strengthen us in our faith, that we would carry around an attitude of being faithful! Amen.

Keep My Words


“My son, keep my words and store up my commands

within you. Keep my commands and you will live;

guard my teachings

as the apple of your eye.”

Proverbs 7: 1, 2

Once again God reminds us, to do more than just listen to what He says. There is blessing in the doing.

Does this sound like too much law, and not enough Spirit? Well, remember in the Gospel of John, we are told that if we love God, we will keep His commandments. And remember the book of James? We are to be doers of His word, and not hearers only.

Yes, there is benefit in following Him, but what is God really after? Well the whole point of this portion is contained in the last 2 lines.

Keeping or guarding His teachings as the apple of our eye, means simply we are to listen to and do His teachings, out of love, or because we love Him.

More than anything, God wants us to love Him. If we do that, the rest falls into place.

Heavenly Father help us to love You, even when we do not understand our circumstances. Help us to pray each day, and to trust in You, as we follow Your teachings. Amen!

A Friend Loves at All Times


“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”

Proverbs 17:17

Have you ever been through a tough time, and friends were there to help you through it? I have too.

And like wise have you ever been through something horrible, and even life changing, and there was no one there to help you? Yep, I’ve been there too! I think it depends on what period of our life we are in.

But a friend, a true friend is there regardless of our life circumstances. And you know what? We are to be there for them as well. That’s what friends are for, that’s what friends do.

So be there when you’re needed, even if it does cost some time, maybe some inconvenience. Your friend is worth investing in.

And when this verse mentions a “brother”, this is a about a blood brother. Family is to be and should be there for us, in times of adversity. If that doesn’t happen in our life or if our family is gone now, we should not give up. Pray instead. Perhaps God would send some people to be part of our life as a type of family.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the people in our lives, both friends and family, that can be a support for us during our times of need. And thank You Our God, that we can be part of their circle of support as well.

And Lord God we lift up to You those that have no one. Please give them the strength they need to make it through their circumstances. And if it is Your will, please give them some good people, give them some good friends, as part of their circle.

We trust in You God. Amen.
