Blessed Are They

20170915_165455

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek…..

Matthew 5: 3-5a

My reason for sharing this portion is twofold. It shows that even in the most difficult circumstances, God is at work.

Secondly, these words also show us that He cares, and of course there are many other verses in both Old and New Testaments that indicate God loves us.

So why do bad things happen to good people in the first place? Many books have been written on this topic, and I’m not a theologian, but the best book I have found on the topic was written by C. S. Lewis.

Lewis tackles many of these questions in his book, The Problem of Pain. He explains that in addition to the laws of nature, natural disasters, humanity’s inhumanity to each other, there are still a few unexplained tragedies, that we may never know the reasons for.

God is high above all our circumstances, and we cannot see the big picture. I think its important to remember the concept of “trust”. If everything always went great would we really know what trust is?

Heavenly Father, Abba, please help us through these circumstances, where all we can do is trust in You. You know the ones we face, sometimes daily. Give us the insight we need to push through, with hope.

And bring healing to our spirits, because we know that You care about each one of us. Amen.

Pain and Suffering

20170915_165534

“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death

or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21:4

So we know in the end how things will turn out! I’m looking forward to no more death, or pain, or suffering. Thank you God!

Ok, but what about right now? Many believers encourage us to keep going, no matter what happens in our lives. Ever heard the phrase, “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger”? But no one can really say that about what we face, because they are not in our shoes.

And we know there are people that are so traumatized, by events occurring in their lives, they either don’t recover, or it is a long process to recovery. I was surprised to find out recently that mental illness can happen, from trauma in a person’s life.

The human spirit is so fragile, we should not judge people that are internally shattered.

Lord God, help us to be compassionate regarding people who need help, For the mentally ill, help us to have a heart of compassion, without judging them. Help us to also realize they may need more help than we are able to offer.

And Lord, we look forward to the day, when there is no more pain or suffering! Amen.

P.S. I will continue a little more with this topic, next time. Be blessed!

Faith and Good Works

20170916_124237“What good is it my brothers and sisters,

if someone claims to have faith

but has no deeds?

Can such faith save them?

….in the same way, faith by itself,

if it is not accompanied by actions

is dead.”

James 2: 14, 17

So according to James, we need faith in order to be pleasing to Him. But this wonderful book of the Bible also tells us that good works are incredibly important!

We need faith and good works – both at the same time.

Did you know that some of the early church fathers wanted to remove this book from the Bible, and do you know why?

Because it focuses so much on doing right, and in their minds not enough about “grace”.

Heavenly Father, help us to do good, so that we can show we have faith, not to simply be religious, or proud in any way, but to lift up Who You are!

Amen! Be blessed this weekend!

Quick to Listen

20171001_150010.jpg

“…Everyone should be quick to listen,

slow to speak

and slow to become angry.

Because human anger does not produce

the righteousness that God desires.”

James 1:19b, 20

So if we want to show that we are Godly people, we need to listen more and talk less!

And we need to get less angry when people do or say something we don’t like.

Heavenly Father, help us to follow You by listening better, and getting angry less, even in tough circumstances (which is not easy). Amen!

Rejoice Always

20170503_163852.jpg

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances……”

I Thessalonians 5: 16 – 18a

Ok, so we all know how difficult this is to do! There’s not one of us that hasn’t struggled with rejoicing always. And yet God has given us a recipe of sorts on how to accomplish this – by praying continually!

Alright, so does God want us to forget about doing the laundry or going to our jobs, and pray instead? No, what this means is – as we go about our day we can pray here and there as we run into circumstances that are difficult.

And what exactly is a prayer? It is simply words from our hearts, spoken or silently lifted up. You can even pray with your eyes open! I’m serious! It could be as simple as, “Lord I need some help down here!”

Lord God, please help us to pray continually so that we can walk in an attitude of praising you, and rejoicing always! Amen, and hallelujah!

He Wept

20170503_163145

“Jesus wept.”

John 11: 35

This is one of the shortest and yet most profound of all scriptures.

Why was He weeping? He was weeping over the jewel of a city – Jerusalem.

More importantly, He was weeping over people, people that in many cases had rejected God. They simply would not receive what He had to say.

But this was not only a problem of Jerusalem but of all people. Rejecting God is a human problem. Many believe He was weeping and praying about all of us. Why?

Because God always wants the best for us, and we are all, each one, His children.

Lord God please help us to love other people and have compassion for them. Help us to see people the way You do.

And Father we do pray for the victims of Las Vegas, and their families. Please bring healing, restoration, and comfort to all. Amen.

Not on Prayer Alone

20170628_154122.jpg

“You must remember not to build on prayer and contemplation alone.

Unless you strive to live the virtues, you will never grow beyond the stature of spiritual dwarves.”

Saint Teresa of Avila.

St. Teresa (not Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta) was always a straight shooter, always telling it like it was, or at least the way she saw it.

Basically she was saying here, that we need to live the life we profess, not just talk about it, or pray about it.

This reminds me so much of the book of James, where we are told to be doers of the word, not listeners only.

It makes no sense to act all religious and pious, and not at least attempting to live the life of faith that we should.

Heavenly Father, thank You that we can pray and talk with You, but help us also to be good examples, living for You! Amen.

Whoever Claims to Love God

20170915_164727

“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar.

For whoever does not love their brother or sister,

whom they have seen, cannot love God,

whom they have not seen.”

I John 4:20

Strong words indeed! Yet it is clear that with this illustration God is telling us that loving each other is an essential part of our faith. If we do not love our brother or sister, then we are not following the faith, because we can’t possibly be loving God.

However, I have seen folks debate though, who is actually our brother or sister. Are they only people we know, that go to our church? Or do they have to belong to the same type of church?

I don’t think so, in fact when I read this I think of the Good Samaritan. Do you remember how he helped a man by the side of the road, that had been beaten and robbed? It is true he was called the good neighbor, not a brother, but the spirit of these Scriptures is the same.

And remember we are all descended from Adam and Eve. So, in that sense, we are all related! One things for sure, hate is never an option.

Heavenly Father, please help us to love people, and truly reflect Your love here in the earth, even when the other person is much different than we are. In Christ’s name, amen.

God is Light

20160912_144715

“…..God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”

I John 1: 5b, 6

Have you ever met someone that talked a great deal about faith, and never really lived it? What a mess that can be!

We know that God is perfect and yet we are not. So, some may look at this verse and ones like it, and say that if there is any sin in our hearts at all, we are doomed!

And yet this is more of a warning to all of us, not to lie to ourselves. It does not speak to our occasional mess ups, it does speak though to being phony, or not living out our faith, not living for Him. That really is walking in darkness.

Fortunately there is forgiveness, and we have an advocate with the Father!

Heavenly Father help us to live for You and rely on Your grace working in our lives. Forgive us when we do mess up, and help us to live for You! In Christ’s name, amen.

Loving with Actions and in Truth

100_1069

“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need

but has no pity on them, how can the love of God

be in that person? Dear children, let us not love

with words or speech

but with actions and in truth.”

I John 3: 17, 18

There are times where the things we say, are not nearly as important as what we do. And there are so many needs in our world, in the U.S. and overseas.

Heavenly Father, please help us to know how and when to help people, including with our time and money. We need the wisdom, and the heart to make a positive impact Lord God. Guide us, amen.
