From Everlasting to Everlasting

“But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love

is with those who fear him, and his righteousness

with their children’s children”

Psalm 103: 17

We often think of God as being eternal, and we know that God is love. It’s not only that He gives us love, or that he helps us to love others (and he does both), but His very essence is love. But do we think of God this way, and His love being eternal?

It’s difficult for us to fully comprehend God’s love. Do you know why? Because our idea of love is so different! We often think of love as being somewhat temporary don’t we. Lovers, may love each other today, but tomorrow? Who knows!

But God is not like that. God’s love continues no matter what. It always has been, and always will be. And within our families it is far reaching, even beyond our own generations. Wow!

And the term for fear in this verse, is not a negative in anyway. It is instead an awe, a respect for God that those who follow Him, carry with them, wherever they go! Hallelujah!

Heavenly Father thank You, that You not only love us, but Your love is eternal! Help us to follow You, and strengthen our faith, our trust in You. Hallelujah!

Amen and amen.

A Prayer for Older Couples

Heavenly Father, thank you that we are still together,

loving each other, here on this earth.

Even though we’ve changed,

and love changes over time,

help us to look to You,

to trust in You

and to always work together

as a team.

May we embrace our differences,

and may love always

be our guide. And Lord

You know our aches and pains,

guard our hearts,

that we will not be bitter.

May we have the love in our hearts

and the courage to always say

“I do.” And “I still do.”

Give Thanks to the Lord

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;

His love endures forever.”

Psalm 118: 29

Now we all know and can rejoice that God loves us. But we can also rejoice in the fact that He is good! Yes, and for sure.

Even more astounding is that His love endures forever! If there is anything stable and true in this world, it is that His love endures forever, and ever, and ever……times infinity! Yay!

Lord God You are good! Forgive us for doubting this sometimes. Help us to trust in You more, and to walk in Your ways filled with faith. Amen!

I Will Sing of Your Love and Justice

“I will sing of your love and justice; to you, Lord I will sing praise.

I will be careful to lead a blameless life……”

Psalm 101: 1, 2a

Sometimes we have the wrong impression about God don’t we? We can often think of Him only as a loving God, where is like a doting Grandfather, winking kindly if we do wrong. Nope, that ain’t it!

But sometimes well-meaning people can be too harsh! They can almost sound glad that God will judge those wicked sinners! That ain’t it either.

We are each accountable for the things we do in this life. God is both love and justice, in fact, the perfect balance of the two.

Here’s an example: What parent would be a good parent if we allowed our children to play in a busy street, where there are cars going back and forth? We keep them safe by giving them parameters to live by.

And notice the response of the psalmist here. He praises God and wants to live a blameless life. He is very much connected in his relationship to the Lord God.

Heavenly Father, help us to live for You, remembering You want the best for us! Amen, and amen!

His Love Endures Forever

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.”

Psalm 118:29

This very famous verse is so powerful, because it reminds us to give thanks to Him, and that He is good! In our crazy, mixed up world, this portion refocuses our minds on the goodness of God, and on the goodness of His love enduring forever, and ever, and ever!!!

Ain’t that so cool?!!

We praise You our God, help us to always dwell on Your goodness, especially in the tough times. Amen!!

Whoever Claims to Love God

“Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar.

For whoever does not love their brother or sister,

whom they have seen, cannot love God,

whom they have not seen.”

I John 4:20

Strong words indeed! Yet it is clear that with this illustration God is telling us that loving each other is an essential part of our faith. If we do not love our brother or sister, then we are not following the faith, because we can’t possibly be loving God.

However, I have seen folks debate though, who is actually our brother or sister. Are they only people we know, that go to our church? Or do they have to belong to the same type of church?

I don’t think so, in fact when I read this I think of the Good Samaritan. Do you remember how he helped a man by the side of the road, that had been beaten and robbed? It is true he was called the good neighbor, not a brother, but the spirit of these Scriptures is the same.

And remember we are all descended from Adam and Eve. So, in that sense, we are all related! One things for sure, hate is never an option.

Heavenly Father, please help us to love people, and truly reflect Your love here in the earth, even when the other person is much different than we are. In Christ’s name, amen.

In Giving We Receive

“…for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning

that we are pardoned; And it is in dying

that we are born

to eternal life.”

from the Poem of St. Francis

As we give our lives to serving God it is indeed a surrender. In that sense, we let go of ourselves, and we truly receive so many spiritual blessings in return. This also reminds me of the phrase we reap what we sow. A farmer plants seeds, and in return those seeds grow, and hopefully one day will produce food.

And we are to forgive others, the way we have been forgiven, unconditionally. Not that we agree with the wrong done to us, but we let it go and trust God to work it all out.

Heavenly Father, help us to be forgiving of others and giving of ourselves – first and foremost to you, and also to others. Amen.

P. S. See you on Monday!

Bringing the Refreshing

“One person gives freely, yet gains even more;

another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.

A generous person will prosper;

whoever refreshes others

will be refreshed.”

Proverbs 11: 24, 25

Have you ever noticed how stingy people lose out on so much joy? And it not only is it a joy to give, but how humbling and refreshing it can be when we are on the receiving end!

Years ago my wife and I went on a missions trip overseas. We stayed in an empty house, which also served as the meeting place for a church. And yes we were roughing it with no beds, but we slept in our sleeping bags on the tile floor.

One day a refrigerator made an appearance, and soon there after we found food in it, and we were told it was all for us. Talk about humbling! We were so blessed and wondered where it all came from. This was a poor country and the people did not have much at all.

It wasn’t until the end of our time there, we found out the refrigerator belonged to one of the pastors, and they were the ones that had stocked it with food. They had taken from their own house, and their own family, and had given it all to us.

We were so humbled we cried, and it still brings me to tears.

Heavenly Father, thank you that in this mixed up, crazy world there are still people that love You, and care about others. Thank You for all those that give and bring refreshing to others. In Christ’s name, amen.
