Like an Eagle

20171018_150721

“In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye,

like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft.”

Deuteronomy 32: 10, 11

I love this portion and the way it speaks of God caring for us. Sounds like the Psalms – doesn’t it?

But what does it mean to be the apple of His eye? Well I think it means we are lovely in His sight.

But notice we didn’t start out this way! He redeemed us from the wasteland of not following Him!

And I love the illustration of God being like an eagle. Can’t you just picture Him spreading His wings over us? So cool!

Lord God thank You for redeeming us and caring about us.

And thank You for these beautiful words that encourage us! Thank You my God!

Amen and amen.

With All Your Heart

100_5421

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul

and with all your strength. These commandments

that I give you today are to be

upon your hearts.”

Deuteronomy 6: 5,6

God has always been concerned about our hearts. We should love Him for who He is and for what He has done in our lives.

And you know what? When we love Him, everything else begins to fall into place. When we love God, we will be very good employees. When we love God, we love our spouses, and we forgive them, and pray for them…… and so on. This is what makes this verse so important. We are told later in the Scriptures it is indeed the Greatest Commandment.

And when we love God, we care about other people, or at least we are supposed to! Which leads us to the Second Greatest Commandment, loving our neighbor as our self. So, it is good to feed the poor, and maybe even work to have policies that help them.

And it’s ok to carry signs in the streets. Among those recently protesting gun violence, I saw one sign with a Scripture on it. We are to love people, not our guns.

And in our country, we sometimes confuse conservatism with loving “what is right”. We must be very careful to love our neighbor and not worship idols.

Lord God, help us to love You with all our hearts, and to love people as ourselves. Only You can do this Lord.

We trust in You and praise You! Amen and amen.

The Eternal God is Your Strength

20170628_154245

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. He will drive out your enemies before you…….”

Deuteronomy 33: 27

Isn’t that line amazing to think about? The One who made the heavens and earth, and everything in between…is…our refuge! What amazing words. He is also the God of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, eternal and forever!

And in His magnificence, He cares about us. We are to feel safe with Him holding us, and in control of our lives. Even when things are spiraling out of control, God Almighty says “I’ve got you!”

And before you celebrate victory over your enemies, this is not talking about that neighbor that doesn’t like you! No, no, no, and no. Today our enemies are different. Ever been afraid, or angry? Ever had a lack of faith which led you down the wrong road? Oh yeah. God speaks to us today, right where we are. Through Him we can have the victory we need!

Thank You God, that we can turn to You, and that You are our refuge! Help us to trust in You as we walk with You. Catch us when we fall, and help us to see our lives through the eyes of faith. Continue to strengthen us. Amen.

The Lord Bless You and Keep You

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine

upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord

turn his face toward you

and give you peace.”

Numbers 6: 22-26

In countless churches and Jewish congregations, around the world this beautiful and timeless prayer is recited each week.

God bless you, and Happy Thanksgiving!

With All Our Hearts

100_1295

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God

with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

These commandments that I give you today

are to be on your hearts.”

Deuteronomy 6: 4-6

To all my Jewish friends out there – Shabbat Shalom! Tonight is Friday, and as the sun goes down, no matter where you are in the world (according to each time zone) Jewish people, regardless of how liberal or conservative, will be singing a variation of these words from Deuteronomy.

“Hear O Israel…..Shema Israel, Adonai Elohenu, Adonai Echad……” It is a prayer really, that is sung by each congregation, out loud, as a way of showing love for God.

And I love the fact that God emphasizes here – the heart! Ain’t that so cool?? Did you know such a thing was in the Old Testament? This is where we get the idea of the Greatest Commandment, mentioned in the New Testament.

And right after these verses, it continues that we are to teach our children, and our children’s children, to love God too. Very cool indeed!

Heavenly Father thank you that there is such a wonderful history of You loving people, and of teaching us how we are to love You! Help us to be loving and kind to all people, and to love You most of all! We love You Adonai (Lord). Amen.

The Everlasting Arms

100_1281

“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath

are the everlasting arms.”

Deuteronomy 33:27a

When we say that God is eternal, we are strengthened by the fact He is always there. The One who existed before time began, is our refuge!

And the next part of this verse is even more encouraging. Underneath are His everlasting arms! What a wonderful illustration, of God being our strength. We can trust in Him, and rely on Him, even through circumstances we don’t understand.

Heavenly Father, we trust in You, and thank you that You are there, You are here with us, always and forever! Amen.
