Rejoice Always

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances……”

I Thessalonians 5: 16 – 18a

Ok, so we all know how difficult this is to do! There’s not one of us that hasn’t struggled with rejoicing always. And yet God has given us a recipe of sorts on how to accomplish this – by praying continually!

Alright, so does God want us to forget about doing the laundry or going to our jobs, and pray instead? No, what this means is – as we go about our day we can pray here and there as we run into circumstances that are difficult.

And what exactly is a prayer? It is simply words from our hearts, spoken or silently lifted up. You can even pray with your eyes open! I’m serious! It could be as simple as, “Lord I need some help down here!”

Lord God, please help us to pray continually so that we can walk in an attitude of praising you, and rejoicing always! Amen, and hallelujah!

You Lord are Mighty

100_1471

“Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?

You Lord are mighty, and your faithfulness

surrounds you. You rule over

the surging sea; when its waves

mount up, you still them.”

Psalm 89: 8, 9

Here is some of that wonderful praise language I mentioned yesterday. Did you know too, that God’s faithfulness surrounds Him? And of course, there is no one like Him!

Notice too that God rules over the surging sea. Have you ever been in rough waters, metaphorically? I have! Sometimes life tosses us around and we feel beaten up.

But He stills the surging sea! And He will bring calm into your life too.

Heavenly Father, thank you that we can focus on You, Your glory and majesty, and be encouraged. And we know that You are all powerful. We praise you. Please calm our storms in this life. Amen!

The Victory of His Majesty

20170628_132524

In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth,

humility and justice; let your right hand

achieve awesome deeds.

Psalm 45: 4

Aren’t the Psalms amazing in how they praise God? The words chosen by the Psalmist lift up God so high, and so beautifully. And frequently we see prayers asking God for protection, and victory over His enemies.

When we read the Psalms, we are drawn into the praise and rejoicing. And we focus on how majestic God is, how amazing, how far above this messed up world He is.

And do we have enemies today? Yes, but not people. Our enemies are fear, hate, anger and so many other things that are destructive.

Lord God, thank you that when we focus on the Psalms, our hearts can be drawn into Your majesty, your victory! Continue to work in our hearts, and help us to praise you, even in difficult times. May there be victory in praising You!

Tragedies

20171001_150001

There are times we don’t know what to say,

a silence of deep grieving, pulling us

further away

from courage, and yet

in the pain always the proof

we were made, with God’s heart

to strengthen

and bring hope

to each other.

Confident

20170503_162642.jpg

“I remain confident in this: I will see the goodness

of the Lord in the land of the living.

Wait for the Lord; be strong

and take heart and wait

for the Lord.”

Psalm 27: 13, 14

Have you been praying for something for a long time, and yet you’re still waiting? This is difficult! And most of the time we can’t understand why our prayers are not answered.

But we can be confident! Our trust, and even our waiting, can actually make us strong. If we allow ourselves the time, our faith will grow and our confidence can increase.

And following God is not only about enjoying His presence when we pass away. He is very much a God of the here and now, and He knows everything we go through.

Lord God, please increase our faith, our confidence in You, even as we wait for our prayers to be answered, or even if they will not be answered at all. We know You have our best interest in mind, in Christ’s name, amen.

I Will Be With You

100_1499

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.

When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior….”

Isaiah 43: 2, 3a

God really did protect the people of Israel in so many ways, didn’t He? And yet how do we apply these verses today?

We know there are hurricanes, flooding, and other natural disasters that do take place, even to people that are walking closely with Him. Devastation is in so many parts of our world right now.

I believe we can look at these verses today with the eyes of faith, as beautiful illustrations that God does protect us, that we are under His care. We can be encouraged greatly by also focusing on the positive things that God is doing in our lives, right now!

He protects us all the time! Isn’t that so cool?

Heavenly Father You are so awesome, and You protect us in so many ways, sometimes without us knowing or even thinking about it. Thank You My God! Guide us through the disasters in our lives when they do take place, and may we continue to trust in you! Amen.

quote from the NIV Bible

My Strength

Fort

“I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer….”

Psalm 18: 1, 2a

A fortress is a powerful illustration of Our God. He is so powerful that He protects us in many ways, 24/7. I think of solid, large stones when I think of Him as a fortress. His strength cannot be shaken. Certainly, He knows every trial we go through.

But when we say the Lord is our strength, do we mean only in the tough times? He should be our strength at all times, giving us a confidence that seems beyond our own strength. And in good times let’s give Him the credit for being the strength of our lives.

Heavenly Father, thank you for being our source of strength, that You are our fortress in the good times and in the tough times. Help us to trust in You more, even when we don’t understand what we go through, in Christ’s name. Amen.

One Who is Wise

20170415_115431.jpg

“Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honor.

One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty

and pull down the stronghold

in which they trust.”

Proverbs 21: 21, 22

Do you pursue righteousness and love? It’s not easy in today’s world. When we do follow God’s ways, good things take place in our lives, but that should never be our motive. It’s simply a matter of side benefits.

And when we are operating in the wisdom from above, we will be able to face the very tough circumstances in our lives. I love how that’s worded here.

Heavenly Father help us to pursue righteousness, and love, and help us to gain wisdom from You. Help us to overcome the tough things that can attempt to diminish ,or even destroy our faith in You. Amen.

You Are There

20170606_155714

You are there My God, even in the midst of my ramblings,

my wonderings of where you are, when

I can’t see You, when I don’t understand, when

there is confusion, barely a light

You are there, I thank you

My God

that You will never

leave us.
