“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
These commandments that I give you today
are to be on your hearts.”
Deuteronomy 6: 4-6
To all my Jewish friends out there – Shabbat Shalom! Tonight is Friday, and as the sun goes down, no matter where you are in the world (according to each time zone) Jewish people, regardless of how liberal or conservative, will be singing a variation of these words from Deuteronomy.
“Hear O Israel…..Shema Israel, Adonai Elohenu, Adonai Echad……” It is a prayer really, that is sung by each congregation, out loud, as a way of showing love for God.
And I love the fact that God emphasizes here – the heart! Ain’t that so cool?? Did you know such a thing was in the Old Testament? This is where we get the idea of the Greatest Commandment, mentioned in the New Testament.
And right after these verses, it continues that we are to teach our children, and our children’s children, to love God too. Very cool indeed!
Heavenly Father thank you that there is such a wonderful history of You loving people, and of teaching us how we are to love You! Help us to be loving and kind to all people, and to love You most of all! We love You Adonai (Lord). Amen.
