Quick to Listen

20171001_150010.jpg

“…Everyone should be quick to listen,

slow to speak

and slow to become angry.

Because human anger does not produce

the righteousness that God desires.”

James 1:19b, 20

So if we want to show that we are Godly people, we need to listen more and talk less!

And we need to get less angry when people do or say something we don’t like.

Heavenly Father, help us to follow You by listening better, and getting angry less, even in tough circumstances (which is not easy). Amen!

I Am Your Shield

100_5612.JPG

“…Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.”

Genesis 15: 1

Abram was not perfect and yet he was a follower of God. He loved God and had great faith.

These verses are just before God promises him that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars!

Later his name is changed to Abraham, and he walks even more closely with the God of the universe. And further on, in the New Testament, we see that Abraham was so blessed, because of his faith.

In many ways Abraham is an example to us all, a father to us, because of his great love for Adonai (the Lord).

Help us to love you Lord God, to have a great faith in You, for the big things, and for the little things! Amen.

Rejoice Always

20170503_163852.jpg

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances……”

I Thessalonians 5: 16 – 18a

Ok, so we all know how difficult this is to do! There’s not one of us that hasn’t struggled with rejoicing always. And yet God has given us a recipe of sorts on how to accomplish this – by praying continually!

Alright, so does God want us to forget about doing the laundry or going to our jobs, and pray instead? No, what this means is – as we go about our day we can pray here and there as we run into circumstances that are difficult.

And what exactly is a prayer? It is simply words from our hearts, spoken or silently lifted up. You can even pray with your eyes open! I’m serious! It could be as simple as, “Lord I need some help down here!”

Lord God, please help us to pray continually so that we can walk in an attitude of praising you, and rejoicing always! Amen, and hallelujah!

You Lord are Mighty

100_1471

“Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?

You Lord are mighty, and your faithfulness

surrounds you. You rule over

the surging sea; when its waves

mount up, you still them.”

Psalm 89: 8, 9

Here is some of that wonderful praise language I mentioned yesterday. Did you know too, that God’s faithfulness surrounds Him? And of course, there is no one like Him!

Notice too that God rules over the surging sea. Have you ever been in rough waters, metaphorically? I have! Sometimes life tosses us around and we feel beaten up.

But He stills the surging sea! And He will bring calm into your life too.

Heavenly Father, thank you that we can focus on You, Your glory and majesty, and be encouraged. And we know that You are all powerful. We praise you. Please calm our storms in this life. Amen!

The Victory of His Majesty

20170628_132524

In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth,

humility and justice; let your right hand

achieve awesome deeds.

Psalm 45: 4

Aren’t the Psalms amazing in how they praise God? The words chosen by the Psalmist lift up God so high, and so beautifully. And frequently we see prayers asking God for protection, and victory over His enemies.

When we read the Psalms, we are drawn into the praise and rejoicing. And we focus on how majestic God is, how amazing, how far above this messed up world He is.

And do we have enemies today? Yes, but not people. Our enemies are fear, hate, anger and so many other things that are destructive.

Lord God, thank you that when we focus on the Psalms, our hearts can be drawn into Your majesty, your victory! Continue to work in our hearts, and help us to praise you, even in difficult times. May there be victory in praising You!

I Will Not Be Shaken

100_1457

“I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night

my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always

on the Lord. With Him at my right hand

I will not be shaken.”

Psalm 16: 7,8

When times are tough, is often the right time to praise the Lord, even when we don’t feel like it!

But notice also, the Psalmist is saying how he keeps his eyes on the Lord. In other words, he is not ruled by his circumstances, and he is trusting the One who made him.!

And notice the result – he has confidence now that God is with him, and he will not be shaken. Everything is going to work out for the best.

Lord God thank you for being there for us, each and every day. Help us to focus on you, and not our circumstances. We trust in you Lord, so strengthen our faith. Amen.

The Glory of the Lord

20160514_175924

“…I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.

And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

Isaiah 6: 1b – 3

Sometimes God can seem scary. In this call of Isaiah as a prophet, God decides to bring a revelation to him, of the majesty and holiness of who He is. It is very much like the final book of the Bible, the book of Revelation.

So why does God do this? Well sometimes people need to understand the holiness of God in order to be reminded of how great He is, and that we as humans need to follow Him from our hearts, and sometimes we need to be cleansed. We need a greater awareness of who He is.

Further in this chapter Isaiah says, “I am undone!”. He realizes he needs to be cleansed, and God does cleanse him in an unusual way.

But it is not a matter of God being mean, it’s a matter of Him being far above His creation.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder of Your holiness, and that there is cleansing when we need it. And thank you for so many examples of people following You, seeking to do what is right, and doing great things – living for You. Amen!

I Will Give You a New Heart

20171001_145851.jpg

“For I will take you out of the nations; gather you from all the countries…..

I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean….

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you…. “

portions of Ezekiel 36: 24 – 26

You know sometimes the Old Testament can seem so foreign to us, as if it is for someone else, or perhaps it is too ancient for us today.

And yet often this part of God’s word has such power, that we realize it was for the people back then, and it is also for us today.

Here in Ezekiel we see so much of God working in a group of people, making them clean, giving them a new heart, and blessing them so that they can have a new outlook, a new life of walking with Him!

It kind of reminds me of the New Testament!

Lord God thank You that Your word is very consistent, and that You give us a new heart, a new spirit, so that we can walk with you through the challenges of life. Hallelujah!
