Hope and a Future

tree lights

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,

plans to prosper you, and not to harm you, plans

to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

The prophet Jeremiah was often called the “weeping” prophet. God’s people had gone through some terrible times, and most were now in exile, in Babylon, when this was written.

Everything had been shattered. When I thought about this, I thought of how this can apply to us today. Sometimes we are broken, and we need to hear encouragement from heaven.

And in our most broken moments, it seems as if it is all over, nothing good will happen again. But…..look what God does here.

This is not some TED talk, this is the Creator, the Lord God Almighty, saying He has plans for us…..and good things are in store! Hallelujah!!

He gives us hope!! And thankfully we do have a future! We can trust in Him, even in our worst times.

Lord God, our Heavenly Father, thank you for your plans for us! Help us to trust in you, even in the most difficult times. And as we let go of our fears, fill us Lord God with an incredible and amazing……sense of hope. Amen!!

Victory Rests with the Lord

20170916_124207

“There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan

that can succeed against the Lord.

The horse is made ready for the day of battle,

but victory rests with the Lord.”

Proverbs 21: 30, 31

I’m so glad God’s wisdom, and insight is higher than ours! Much stronger than ours!

We do have battles we face don’t we? And you what? We will not win every one of them.

But perhaps when things don’t go well, it is God’s way of moving us forward, but in a different direction.

We have to do our part though, we have to get our horses ready!

Lord God Almighty, please help us to be ready for the battles we face, and help us to walk closely with You.

We ask for Your help in the midst of what we face, sometimes daily.

And Lord please comfort our hearts in the battles we do not win. We know You have our future in Your hands. Amen!

We Wait in Hope

20171018_145702

“We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.

In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.

May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,

even as we put our hope in you.”

Psalm 33: 20-22

We often think of God helping us, but have you ever thought of the Lord, as your shield? Kind of cool huh?

When we look at the next line, we see that God wants us to have our hearts rejoicing. The two lines are very much connected. When we are we rejoicing in God, He becomes our shield! Yay! He is our protector.

And here, our waiting in hope is that active trusting, and having faith in Him, that we’ve mentioned before.

And I love the prayer at the end, asking that His unfailing love be with us! Amen!

Lord God, these lines say it all. Help us to trust in you, with our hearts rejoicing. Be a shield for us Lord God, and may You be with us always. Amen!

In Your Light

20170929_151331

In Your light Lord God we can see ourselves, and our need for You

without You shining in our hearts, we lose direction

we lose the meaning of who we are, so shine

Lord God, forgive us for being so dim

at times, may we be the light

You made us to be,

fully and completely.

Amen.

Love and Faithfulness

100_1069.JPG

“Let love and faithfulness never leave you;

bind them around your neck, write them

on the tablet of your heart.”

Proverbs 3:3

What a beautiful way to describe God’s heart for us. We know that God loves us, so I think this is pointing us to the love and faithfulness that we should carry, for Him and other people.

Remember the two greatest commandments? They are loving God, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.

Binding them around our neck could mean several things. It could be an illustration for showing other people, our love and faithfulness, as in wearing jewelry. But in this context, it seems to be more of reminding ourselves, to love and to be faithful.

And I love the illustration of writing them down on the tablet of our heart – no not the electronic kind, although that could work! Here God is speaking of stone tablets and carving them or etching them onto our hearts! Sounds kind of permanent doesn’t it?

May love and faithfulness never leave us!

Heavenly Father, may we continue to develop in our love for You, and other people. Help us, and strengthen us in our faith, that we would carry around an attitude of being faithful! Amen.

He Set My Feet on a Rock

20170628_154233

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit,

out of the mud and mire;

he set my feet on a rock

and gave me a firm place

to stand.”

Psalm 40: 1, 2

In these beautiful verses God is showing us something of what it means to wait for Him. It’s not easy is it?

We are to wait patiently though. And waiting here does not mean a passive waiting, like waiting for a bus.

Waiting in these verses is more of an active waiting. It implies trusting in Him, and seeking Him!

And look at what happens when we do. We suddenly have a strong foundation.

And by the way, the slime and mire is not always a reference to our sins (although it sure can be).

This also speaks to circumstances that pull us down, causing injury to our spiritual life.

Lord God help us to daily trust in You! Help us to seek You and wait with our hearts filled with faith!! Amen.

Be Strong and Courageous

100_5612

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified;

do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God

will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9

In this exhortation to Joshua, God has left encouragement to all who believe in Him throughout all generations.

It takes courage each day doesn’t it? God is for us, not against us!

And He does not want us to be afraid or discouraged. You see discouragement will disable us, and we will not be able to function the way we should, or the way He wants us to.

And the last line is so empowering. No matter where we go, or what we face, God is with us!! Thank You God!

Heavenly Father thank You for being with us, regardless of what we face! Strengthen us and give us courage each day. Amen.

Keep My Words

20161015_131559

“My son, keep my words and store up my commands

within you. Keep my commands and you will live;

guard my teachings

as the apple of your eye.”

Proverbs 7: 1, 2

Once again God reminds us, to do more than just listen to what He says. There is blessing in the doing.

Does this sound like too much law, and not enough Spirit? Well, remember in the Gospel of John, we are told that if we love God, we will keep His commandments. And remember the book of James? We are to be doers of His word, and not hearers only.

Yes, there is benefit in following Him, but what is God really after? Well the whole point of this portion is contained in the last 2 lines.

Keeping or guarding His teachings as the apple of our eye, means simply we are to listen to and do His teachings, out of love, or because we love Him.

More than anything, God wants us to love Him. If we do that, the rest falls into place.

Heavenly Father help us to love You, even when we do not understand our circumstances. Help us to pray each day, and to trust in You, as we follow Your teachings. Amen!

There is a River

100_1053

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells.”

Psalms 46:4

So what is this river? Actually the river is not a what, but a Who! Water often symbolizes the Holy Spirit of God, and we sometimes forget the Holy Spirit is God Himself.

Ok, so the Holy Spirit makes the city of God glad, but where is this city? Which city? Well if we look further ahead in this verse we will discover the answer.

The city is where God Himself dwells. So where does God dwell now? Within each of our lives!! Wow, ain’t that so cool??

So the river is God flowing in us and through us, working in us, and yes making us glad!

Hallelujah!

Lord God, thank you for being in our hearts and lives. We praise you! And thank You for Your presence, Your Holy Spirit. Amen, and we say amen!!
