One Who is Wise

20170415_115431.jpg

“Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity, and honor.

One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty

and pull down the stronghold

in which they trust.”

Proverbs 21: 21, 22

Do you pursue righteousness and love? It’s not easy in today’s world. When we do follow God’s ways, good things take place in our lives, but that should never be our motive. It’s simply a matter of side benefits.

And when we are operating in the wisdom from above, we will be able to face the very tough circumstances in our lives. I love how that’s worded here.

Heavenly Father help us to pursue righteousness, and love, and help us to gain wisdom from You. Help us to overcome the tough things that can attempt to diminish ,or even destroy our faith in You. Amen.

You Are There

20170606_155714

You are there My God, even in the midst of my ramblings,

my wonderings of where you are, when

I can’t see You, when I don’t understand, when

there is confusion, barely a light

You are there, I thank you

My God

that You will never

leave us.

Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace

20170503_154647

“Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;…..”

from the Prayer of St. Francis

I’ll be sharing more of this very beautiful and powerful prayer in future posts. Have you ever noticed though how the saints (or Saints) seemed to be so much more spiritual than we are? Why is that?

Well I think it’s for two reasons, besides not having the Internet! First, it was the depth of their surrender. They literally gave their lives over to God.

And secondly, it was their humility. They were ordinary people with extraordinary humility. They were so different from us in these ways I think.

Lord God, we may never be a Saint, but help us to live for You! My God, help us to surrender more of our lives and live in humility! In Christ’s name, amen.

My Help Comes from the Lord

100_1055

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker

of heaven and earth.”

Psalm 121: 1, 2

It seems so easy at times to follow God, and be filled with faith, especially when things are going well. But when circumstances knock us down, and we feel like we’ve been beaten with a club, it seems difficult to believe that He loves us.

We have no control over the terrible things, do we?

These verses are the ones my wife stood on, while going through cancer, a blood cancer, and horrific health problems over a period of years. The Lord gave them to her to dwell on. It was a living nightmare for all of us (including our children)  and yet we learned how to survive.

Not only does our help come from God, but He is the One that has made everything!

Lord God help us to trust in You no matter what we face. And help us to have faith, that You really do love us. Amen.

A Day of Rest

20170626_203007

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

but the seventh day is a sabbath….”

Exodus 20: 8-10a

Some say the Sabbath day is on Sunday now. Others are adamant that it has to be on Saturday.

And still others say, we don’t need that anymore, because we are under the New Covenant, and everything should only be internal now.

But if we look at the spirit of the law, God is simply saying here that one day a week is to be put aside for rest! Aren’t you glad?

Heavenly Father, thank you for caring about every detail of our lives, and for revealing Your will, about us getting some much needed rest. Amen.

In the Beginning

20170628_170049

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

Genesis 1: 1

Yes, it was God from the very beginning. Even before there was a world, God was here on the scene.

And yes He made us all. The reason that’s important is, that if we don’t believe that He made us, then we can choose not to follow or accept Him.

Much of the world has this mindset now. They have chosen to say “no” to God being in charge.

But you know what? That’s where we come in. Have you been the light today?

Heavenly Father, please help us to be examples of who You are, and that You are the One in charge. Amen.

Wisdom, and Understanding

20170503_164504

“Get wisdom, get understanding;

do not forget my words or turn away from them.

Do not forsake wisdom,

and she will protect you;

love her, and she will watch over you.”

Proverbs 4: 5, 6

Did you know that God’s wisdom protects you? I don’t know about you, but I could use an extra shield or two!

Lord God, thank you for Your wisdom! Help us to soak in Your words, your will for us, that we can be wise, and live for you.

Amen.

Walk Humbly with Your God

20170503_164326

“He has shown you, O mortal,

what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy

and to walk humbly

with your God.”

Micah 6:8

This is such a powerful verse. Too often we say there is no grace in the Old Testament. This is one of those examples of grace that I love.

And we are not only to accept mercy, we are to give mercy to others.

And we are supposed to be humble. Ever met a proud religious person? It’s awful! Sometimes a proud person can do more damage in the name of God, than anyone else.

Lord God, please help us to be humble, full of mercy, and to walk humbly with you! Amen.

This Little Light of Mine

20170503_163308

“The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being.”

Proverbs 20: 27

I think this verse is telling us that God works through us, and specifically through our spirits (the internal part that we cannot see).

Our spirit is so important, that it serves as a lamp. Remember the children’s song “This Little Light of Mine”?

And when He does work through us, we indeed become light for ourselves and for others.

Heavenly Father, help us to live for you and be a light shining brightly! Amen.

In the Quiet Place

20170628_172231

In the quiet place of my heart

Lord God, You are with me,

strengthening me,

encouraging me, and listening

to every detail.

My God, I am so grateful for Your presence,

Your Spirit dwelling

with us.

Amen.
